Background

The background of the IMPROVE-Project’s research interests is based on the German “Industrie 4.0” initiative. It is closely related to the “Internet of Things” and “Cyber Physical Systems”.

One goal of Industrie 4.0 is to develop a factory of the future or Smart Factory which is resource efficient, able to adapt quickly and offers a better human-machine interaction. Core topics are data analysis and self-diagnosis. The internet of things interconnects machines. Thus it makes huge amounts of data available. However, the problem with this “Big Data” is that there is no human or automation system able to process or work with such a huge amount of data. Thus, IMPROVE uses machine learning approaches to learn models of industrial plants. The generated knowledge is used for anomaly detection, optimization, root cause analysis and more.
